WoW Forever City of Dalaran: bosses, loot and quests

City of Dalaran is open on the WoW Forever beta: how to get in, the eight bosses in order, what each one drops, the quests for both factions and the Spinning Wheel.

City of Dalaran opened on the WoW Forever beta on 8 October[1]. It is a level 28 to 33 dungeon in Alterac Mountains with eight bosses you can fight, four quests for each faction, and a blueprint tailors have been looking for since the beta started. You go in through the city's sewers, and you need one player in the group who has done the attunement quest.

Drop chances below are from the first days of beta runs, so they will move. The item cards always show the client's current stats.

How to get into City of Dalaran

Both factions start with a quest that needs level 30. It sends you to the Image of Archmage Modera outside the city, who hands you Heart of Disruption, the quest that opens the way in[2].

  • Alliance: An Alarming Request, from Emissary Jacques.
  • Horde: Blood in the Streets, from Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill. It gives you a Grimy Key.

Heart of Disruption gives you the Dalaran Sewer Key when you accept it, not when you finish it. You walk through the sewers to a portal at the end of a long pipe. Only one player in the group needs the key[3]. The quests inside can be taken from level 24, so lower players can come along and still get something from the run.

Nearly every enemy inside is immune to Arcane[4]. Arcane mages should bring a Frost or Fire spec, or be ready to wand.

The bosses in order

The game client lists nine encounters for the dungeon. Players have fought eight of them. The ninth, Mana Wraith, has no known spawn and nobody has reported killing it. The "Mana Elemental" in the client is the boss players meet as Arcanic Enigma.

#BossWhat to watch for
1Atrexis the Grave KnightSkeletons keep rising around his circle. He disarms the tank for about 6 seconds.
2Lyn the IgnoredOptional, and has to be summoned. Remove Curse of Thorns.
3Arcane AnomalyFocal Blast: a 3 second cast, then a beam in front of it. Step out of the path.
4Arcanic EnigmaKill the two Mana Phantoms first. Dispel Manamorph. Healers stay out of Silence range.
5Unstable SentinelMalfunction: arcane pulses around it for 6 seconds. Melee step out, ranged stay out.
6Mana DevourerDispel Drain Vitality from the tank.
7Fel AncientBehind a mana barrier. Kill the Suffused Treants, then talk to Magus Fansy Goodbringer.
8Shade of the ArchmageOut of mana, he polymorphs the group and casts Evocation. Dodge Bounding Mana.

The order and the tactics are from players' notes[5][3]. Wowhead's guide leaves Mana Devourer out, but players have looted him[3][5].

Lyn the Ignored is not there when you arrive. Clear the north-east room of the sewers past Atrexis, the one with market stalls and a small pink Summoning Circle. Then a player carrying the Tome of Dalaran clicks the circle. You loot the tome from the Black Tome on the table in Arugal's room in Shadowfang Keep, after he dies[5]. So if you have an SFK run planned, grab the tome there.

The Shade of the Archmage resets if anyone leaves the room, so don't run out to drink.

Loot from every boss

Every boss drops rare items that need level 25 to 30. Item level climbs from 31 at Atrexis to 35 at the Shade. The percentages are from ForeverChanges' early beta records[5].

The Violet Sorcerer's set

The robes and the mantle above are two of five pieces in a new cloth set, Violet Sorcerer's Vestments. The client also has its leggings, sandals and wraps, but nobody has seen those three drop yet[5].

The set bonuses are in the client too. Two pieces give a little Arcane Resistance and three give Spirit. At four, a damaging spell can let part of your mana regeneration keep going while you cast, doubled in cities. At five, it can summon an Arcane elemental to fight with you.

Blueprint: Spinning Wheel, the drop tailors waited for

Tailors on the beta went looking for this blueprint for a week. On Wowhead, players wrote that they had watched the auction house and asked other tailors, and found no sign of it. One guessed on 6 October that it would drop in Dalaran, "which isnt out yet". Two days later, the night the dungeon opened, the same player wrote "yeah it drops in dalaran", and another confirmed it drops from Unstable Sentinel[6].

The blueprint and what it makes

The Spinning Wheel is a camp feature. You place it near a campfire, on top of a Faction Banner if you like, and it keeps the banner's Spirit buff. It shares the one-hour cooldown of every camp feature. Making one takes 2 Simple Wood, 5 Bolts of Silk Cloth and 3 Fine Thread.

Its tooltip says it "allows the creation of certain reagents", and most guides repeat that. In the client, though, 74 tailoring patterns need a Spinning Wheel nearby, and in Classic's client none do. There are 20 Classic patterns among them, Mooncloth, Dreamweave and Felcloth pieces, Icy Cloak and the Felcloth Bag. The other 54 are new Forever patterns, nine families of six: Leggings, Slippers, Handwraps, Cord, Shoulders, Cuffs, Waistcord, Gloves and Sandals. They can be learned from Tailoring 125 to 235. So if you want to make the new cloth gear, someone in your camp needs a Spinning Wheel.

Enchanters get a blueprint here as well. Shade of the Archmage drops Blueprint: Arcane Salvager, which puts a more efficient disenchanting station in your camp. Wowhead lists it from two other bosses, Rath'mael in Ruins of Lordaeron and Charlga Razorflank in Razorfen Kraul, but not from the Shade yet[7].

Quests and rewards

All eight dungeon quests are level 33, can be taken from level 24 and give 9,400 experience each on the beta[2]. Each faction has four, and the Heart of Disruption quest that gets you in is one of them.

Alliance quests

  • Heart of Disruption, from the Image of Archmage Modera: bring back the Arcane Mote from Shade of the Archmage.
  • Power Overwhelming, from High Sorcerer Andromath in Stormwind: kill Arcanic Enigma.
  • A Green Sample, from Shylamiir in Stormwind: bring a Fel Infused Blossom.
  • Starving Arcane, from the Image of Archmage Modera: kill eight each of Seeking Remnants, Saturated Remnants and Mana Echoes.

Horde quests

  • Heart of Disruption, from the Image of Archmage Modera: bring back the Arcane Mote. You hand it in to Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill.
  • The Grave Knight, from Melisara in Tarren Mill: kill Atrexis.
  • Source of Power, from Doctor Martin Felben in Undercity: bring six Cracked Sentry Cores from the Fragmented Sentries.
  • Opportunistic Education, from Rexxie Copperclutch near the sewer entrance: bring The Founding of Dalaran, a book on the back wall past the portal room[5].

The best rewards

Heart of Disruption lets you choose one of three rare items, different for each faction:

Heart of Disruption, Alliance
Heart of Disruption, Horde

The others give a choice of two uncommon items: a cloak or a belt for A Green Sample, a necklace or an off-hand for Starving Arcane, a ring or a belt for Opportunistic Education, and a wand or a cloak for Source of Power. After Heart of Disruption, Alliance players take the mote on to Archmage Celindra in Friend of the Kirin Tor, and Horde players go to her for Shrewd Negotiations[2].

What we don't know about City of Dalaran yet

  • Mana Wraith is in the client's encounter list, but nobody has found it. It may be cut, or not spawned in this build.
  • Drop chances come from a few days of runs and will change. Treat 9% for the Spinning Wheel as "rare", not as a number to plan around.
  • The other three set pieces have not been seen. We don't know which bosses drop them, or whether they come from somewhere else.
  • Spinning Wheels in cities. The client says the 74 patterns need a wheel nearby. We don't know yet if cities have one you can use, or if the camp is the only place.
  • The Alliance start. Some guides put Emissary Jacques in Southshore. We have not checked that ourselves.

The Codex's dungeon page and tailoring page follow the beta client as it changes, so check them for the latest before you head in.
